ANONYMOUS, WOMAN

With my work Anonymous woman, I want to draw attention to the manifestation of women in public space, and their anonymity.

Most female statues in Reykjavík’s urban landscape represent anonymous women, reflecting how women have not been recognized for their specific contributions to society or even identified by name. In contrast, the male statues are more numerous, most of them portraying named men presented with power and dignity, while women are more often shown naked and in fragile or submissive positions. Through my collages, I create a new reality for the anonymous women of the past and borrow from the male statues their clothes and painted confidence! At the same time, I recreate my models and by that I want to draw attention to the manifestation of women in public spaces in Reykjavík and their anonymity.

The black-and-white collage photographs are pinned to a hand-painted corkboard, while the artist also created two sculptures based on her images, breathing life into the photographs and transforming them into physical form.
